The very term “Portal” indicates an entry point for further access to information and content. This also implies that a Website will tend to be static and a Portal will require a Content Management System (CMS) in order to manage the myriad of information contained within the system. A portal is a method by which one can access a number of services. A website is a unique location which is specified by a URL. In a website, only the necessary information is provided. For example, once you log in to your profile, you will see your lobby only. In a portal, all the information which may be used by a number of users is seen. A portal is generally a vehicle by which to gain access to a multitude of ’services’. A web site is a destination in itself. As such the term website refers to a location on the Internet (see this) that is unique and can be accessed through a URL (see this). By that definition a web portal is in fact also a website. However there is a distinction between the two terms based on the subject and content of the website. Web portal is also a website that offers a broad array of resources and services, such as e-mail, forums, search engines, and on-line shopping malls etc. A website (or Web site) is a collection of web pages. It contains info about the particular company which as hosted it. A Web Portal is a subset of the website, which acts as a way or path to enter a particular domain you would like to enter. A Web Portal acts as a gateway to the internet. (A typical dictionary definition of the word portal would be – a doorway or a grand entrance.)Website is a generic term that covers resources from a simple one page HTML site to large, interactive sites, including web portals. Web portal generally refers to a website that offers access to multiple types and/or sources of content, often with the ability for a user to customize the data sources and/or layout.
